Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders

Course description
This course is offered as a one-day programme. Participants will be helped to make the link between theoretical knowledge and practice. The course will place emphasis on reflective practice and examination of the participant's skills, attitudes and communication style. It will make use of presentation, group discussion and tasking, self-directed learning and video.
Level
Intended for those with little or no prior training in autism.

Aims and objectives
- how to enhance motivation, confidence and self-esteem and enable people with autism to make a positive contribution
- help participants to eliminate or reduce behaviours which inhibit progress or impair quality of life or health, and remove barriers to participation and learning
- ensure participants understand the importance of the environment and have knowledge of ways to enhance concentration or remove distractions
- to foster in participants positive expectations and approaches which play to strengths and help individuals with autism enjoy and achieve
- give participants an understanding of the importance of low arousal approaches and how to implement them
- to foster in participants the personal attributes of calmness, predictability and good humour, empathy and an analytical disposition
- develop an evidence base for effective practice.
Person-centred care
The course encourages participants to place the individual with ASD at the centre of their thinking about autism. Participants will be equipped with a simple model for helping them to understand how each person is uniquely affected by autism. Communication strategies, which help people with autism make choices about their lives, will be examined.
